Take Your Foot Off the Brakes
Originally shared August 1, 2024 in the Naked Sunday Newsletter. Adapted for the journal.

Are you burning out while trying to floor it through life?
It’s time to stop sabotaging your progress and take your foot off the brakes.
Many high-performers push themselves relentlessly, not realizing they’re also slamming on the brakes. This leads to burnout and stalled progress.
Most think they need to push harder to achieve their goals, but they’re missing this one crucial part…
Balance Performance with Proper Recovery
Imagine trying to lose weight but not giving your body what it needs to recover. In fitness, most people try to just “train harder,” ignoring their lack of sleep and poor nutrition that act as brakes.
This is where you plateau.
To make progress, you need to “ease off the gas” by not working out as hard, and focus on recovery. This can feel terrifying, like you’re “slowing down.” You might fear falling behind or not doing enough. It’s different from what you’re used to, and you’re probably still comparing yourself to everyone else doing “more” than you.
However, by easing off the gas, you create space for:
Better sleep
Improved nutrition
Reducing lifestyle stress
In reality, you’re “speeding up” because you DON’T have the limitations of the “brakes.”
You’ll have more energy, sharper focus, and consistent peak performance.
Holistic Approach to Success
True success means creating an environment that supports your goals. This involves setting clear boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and managing obligations.
By nurturing supportive relationships and ensuring your daily routines align with your long-term vision, you make it easier to stay consistent with behaviors that lead to success.
Zooming out to take a big picture look at all the elements that are impacting your growth allows you to put the right amount of attention where it’s needed, and stop wasting excess energy on things that don’t.
Reflect, Refine, and Take Action
Reflect: Take a step back and evaluate your current lifestyle. Are you constantly pushing without giving yourself time to recover?
Refine: Identify areas where you can improve. This might mean setting better boundaries, prioritizing sleep, or adjusting your nutrition.
Take Action: Implement changes to create space for recovery and energy. Schedule regular rest days, make time for self-care, and adjust your routines to support your goals.
Focus on quality over quantity, and you’ll find long-term success without burnout. Tailor your approach to fit your unique journey, aligning your actions with your values and aspirations.
