Beyond Resolutions: Mindset, Habits, and Accountability
Originally shared January 16, 2025 in the Naked Sunday Newsletter. Adapted for the journal.

When I owned my gyms, we didn’t see a big influx of New Year’s resolution clients. The people we attracted were different. They weren’t about quick fixes or chasing the hype of a fresh start.
With a higher investment and a focus on meaningful relationships, we worked with people who were serious about making lasting changes.
These were the ones who realized that the initial excitement wasn’t enough. They didn’t see results after a week or two, and they knew something needed to shift.
They were ready to let go of their ego, ask for help, and commit to doing things differently.
If you’ve felt yourself slipping, questioning your goals, or wondering if it’s even possible to change, know this: It’s not too late.
The truth? Success isn’t about setting more goals or trying harder. It’s about aligning your actions with who you are and building a system that supports your growth.
Let’s talk about why Resolutions Fail…
Most resolutions fail because they’re:
Based on external pressures, not personal values. You chase what you think you “should” do instead of what truly resonates with you.
Relying on willpower. It’s a temporary resource that eventually runs out, leaving you stuck and frustrated.
Missing accountability. Without a support system, it’s easy to fall back into old habits.
Sound familiar?
Let’s talk about what actually works.
Three Keys to More Sustainable Goals
1. Mindset: Operate from Abundance, Not Scarcity
Most people set goals because they feel like they’re “not enough.”
“I’m not thin enough.”
“I’m not successful enough.”
“I’m not good enough.”
This mindset keeps you stuck in a cycle of frustration and burnout, constantly chasing something external to fill an internal gap.
When you shift to a mindset of abundance, you begin to operate from self-worth. Instead of striving to prove yourself, you focus on growth, contribution, and purpose.
What this looks like:
Celebrating small wins instead of fixating on what’s missing.
Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth, not signs of failure.
Choosing goals that align with your values and bring you joy.
Ask yourself: How can I approach my goals from a place of abundance instead of lack?
2. Habits: Small, Sustainable Steps
Big goals can feel overwhelming, which is why most people give up. They try to do too much at once, burn out, and quit.
True success is built through small, consistent actions. These actions may seem simple, but over time, they create massive change.
What this looks like:
Breaking your goals into manageable steps.
Prioritizing consistency over intensity.
Revisiting the basics to build a strong foundation.
Ask yourself: What’s one small habit I can start today that moves me toward my goal?
3. Accountability: Align Your Environment with Your Goals
Willpower alone isn’t enough to carry you through. Success happens when your environment and relationships support your goals.
Think about it: When you’re surrounded by people who inspire, challenge, and align with your vision, everything feels easier.
What this looks like:
Choosing relationships that encourage growth and challenge complacency.
Being part of a community where your values are reflected and reinforced.
Creating systems of accountability—whether through a coach, mentor, or group.
Ask yourself: Who can I surround myself with to stay aligned and on track?
